Description
New plants flourish in the aftermath of a fire along the Alaska Highway near the Canadian border. Fire is part of the natural succession process in Alaska's Interior region. This fire occurred in July of 2015, ignited by a lightning strike. By next summer the ash that coats the forest floor will help to fertilize a field of fireweed. Willows will follow, providing food for the moose. The natural and necessary process of succession will culminate in conifers, many the highly flammable black spruce trees. Eventually, a new fire will begin the process again. Fires occurring away from inhabited areas will be allowed to burn. A fire will leave areas untouched, providing a variety of habitats capable of supporting many different animals, and creating a healthy forest.
