Description
Rotting pilings are all that remain of the once bustling docks left by the Treadwell Mining Company on Douglas Island, near Juneau, Alaska. In its heyday, the complex consisted of four mines, and supported a community of miners and their families. Amenities included stores, a marching band, and Alaska's first indoor swimming pool. From 1883 to 1917, the Treadwell complex produced nearly $70 million dollars in gold. The mines employed 2,000 men and operated 24 hours a day, closing only for the Fourth of July and Christmas. All but one mine shut down in 1917, when three of the mines flooded with sea water. Here, a March snowstorm hides Gastineau Channel and the mainland from view.
