Description
The original St. Nicholas Orthodox Church was built in Knik by Russian missionaries around 1870 (possibly as early as 1830.) The log church was moved to Eklutna in 1900. It was used until 1962 when a newer church was built. This is the newer church, which still has an active congregation. The church is quite small, perhaps 16 feet by 24 feet. The congregation will stand through the services; there is one small bench for the elderly or pregnant women. Icons are important in the Russian Orthodox religion. They have been a part of Russian tradition since the year 988, when Greek Orthodoxy was introduced. Over time, Russian Orthodoxy has evolved into a distinct belief system, with its own liturgy, rituals, and customs. The Russian Orthodox icons have also developed in a distinctive style. Some of the icons seen here are from the original church, while others are more modern. The music on this side of the stand is in English, while the opposite side is in Russian. It is a very lovely church and certainly worth a visit.
