Description
Here, downtown Sitka, Alaska, is seen from Japonski Island. Sitka itself is located on Baranof Island. The two islands are connect by McConnell Bridge, just visible in this image. Under Russian rule, Sitka was known as Novoarkhangelsk, or New Archangel. New Archangel was the capital of Russian America, and the sale of Alaska was formalized in Sitka on October 18, 1967. The area was originally settled by the indigenous Tlingit Shee Atik'a people.
