Description
Alaska's Southeast Panhandle is part of a temperate rainforest. Harbors along the Pacific Coast rarely ice over. During a cold spell, the ocean does begin to freeze. Here, large pieces of pan ice have formed, drifting with the current. The ice edges are marked by small pressure ridges forms as the floes grind together. This is a wider section of the harbor, closer to the open water. The ice has only partially filled the open space. Other sections were more solid, with gulls standing on the icy water.
