Description
Fire plays a major part in Alaska's ecosystem. After a wildfire, the alders and fireweed appear first. Alders provide food for moose and other herbivores. Alders and smaller plants are replaced by conifers, which are next in the natural succession. This is mostly black spruce, which burn hot and fast. In time, summer thunderstorms will cause a new wildfire, creating new browse for the moose, and starting the cycle anew.
This fire was one of many in Alaska's 2015 fire season. It burned along the Alaska Highway near the Canadian border.
