Description
This is the inside of the Central Hoist, part of the system for moving ore cars up and down the mountain. The mossy formations in the foreground are remnants of the north wall of this massive building. This shell is what remains of a building from the Treadwell Mines. The Treadwell Mine operated in Douglas, Alaska, in the early 20th Century. It shut down following a fire and cave-in. During its heyday, many thousands of miners and their families lived in Douglas, across Gastineau Channel from Juneau and the Alaska-Juneau Mine.
