Description
This black bear cub was one of three born to a sow near Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in 2017. There were four sows with cubs near the Visitor Center in the summer of 2017, including one with twins, two with triplets, and one with quadruplets. In late summer, the sockeye salmon return to spawn in Steep Creek, and the sows teach their cubs the finer skills of fishing near a heavily used viewing platform. This cub was bawling loudly for his mama, who was just across the stream. There are few big boars (males) seen near the visitor center, making the area more attractive to the sows. The boars may kill the cubs if they come in contact with the babies.
