Description
Devil's club (Oplopanax horridus) is a large shrub native primarily to the temperate rainforest of the Pacific Northwest. It is often found in large thickets, making human travel difficult at times. The leaves may reach twelve inches across on a large plant, which may easily exceed six feet in height. The spines are painful and cause irritation. The plant has many traditional uses, including a salve for topical pain relief. The salve is readily available on line. This specimen towered over me, giving me this view of the light and shadow play on its broad leaves.
