Description
As the cruise ship Noordam approaches Juneau, Alaska, it passes Sandy Beach on Douglas Island. The huge boats normally make little noise as they navigate the channel. On this day, a fog bank further down the busy channel necessitated sounding of the ship's foghorn at regular intervals. I heard it coming long before it emerged from the fog, and waited here to photograph the behemoth.
The pilings are relics of the Treadwell Mining Complex, which closed down following a cave in early in 1917. The beach itself is a relic of the mines. The sand is a product of the gold extraction process, which involved crushing tons of rock to separate the gold ore.
