Description
As the cruise ship Noordam approaches downtown Juneau, Alaska, it passes Sandy Beach and the Treadwell Pump House on Douglas Island. The huge boats normally make little noise as they navigate the channel. On this day, a fog bank further down the busy channel necessitated sounding of the ship's foghorn at regular intervals. I heard it coming long before it emerged from the fog, and waited here to photograph the behemoth.
The pump house is a relic of the Treadwell Mining Complex, which closed down following a cave in early in 1917. The pump house moved many thousands of gallons of salt water every day for the mine equipment, Even the beach itself is a creation of the mines. The sand is a product of the gold extraction process, which involved crushing tons of rock to separate the gold ore.
