Description
Abandoned ore carts rest below the high tide mark on Sandy Beach, located across Gastineau Channel from downtown Juneau, Alaska. The carts, rotted pilings, and even the sand are remnants of the Treadwell Mining Complex, a bustling city in its own right during the early Twentieth Century. The snowy scar on the hillside beyond the carts is the site of the cave in and resulting flooding which closed three of four mines in the Treadwell Mining Complex.
