Description
The western skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus) grows in California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, and British Columbia. It is very common along streams and marshy areas in Southeast Alaska. Skunk cabbage derives its name from its skunk like odor. This perennial is one of the first plants to appear in spring. Black bears are fond of the young plants, as are Sitka blacktail deer.
