Description
This is the inside of the upper hoist building, part of the system for moving ore cars up and down the mountain. This shell is what remains of a building from the Treadwell Mines. The Treadwell Mine operated in Douglas, Alaska, in the early 20th Century. It shut down following a fire and cave-in. During its heyday, many thousands of miners and their families lived in Douglas, across Gastineau Channel from Juneau and the Alaska-Juneau Mine.
