Description
The area near Summit Lake, located in the Alaska Range between Delta Junction and Glennallen, is a popular winter destination for Alaskans. Snow is usually plentiful throughout the winter, making it a true winter playground for the snowmachine enthusiast. As long as the snow lasts, locals tow their machines to the area, leaving the snow crisscrossed with tracks.
This was taken a few miles from Summit Lake, home of the Arctic Man Ski & Sno-Go Classic. Held in April, this annual event combines downhill skiing and snowmachines. Following a two mile downhill skiing course, the skier grabs atop rope on his partner's machine. The driver tows the skier uphill another 2.5 miles, reaching speeds of over 80 miles an hour, before the skier takes on a twelve-hundred-foot drop to the finish line. The event draws crowds to camp and party at the site.
