Description
This iceberg is trapped in the frozen surface of Mendenhall Lake in Juneau, Alaska. It is possible to walk two miles across Mendenhall Lake to the face of Mendenhall Glacier following a cold spell. Caution is advised, as icebergs roll and shift as they melt. Ice against the glacier's face may not melt completely, and the area near Nugget Falls is never safe. This is only a small portion of a much bigger berg.

This photo is amazing - so striking, with a slightly eerie/extraterrestrial quality about it. I love it!

Thank you! We try to make it across the ice at least once a year, as long as the weather stays cold long enough. I always get some good shots. It is over a mile across the lake to the glacier. The lake ice is usually studded with icebergs in fascinating shapes and shades of blue.
