Description
The TransAlaska Pipeline crosses the mighty Tanana River at -40 degrees. The river's main channel remains ice free. The water is warmer than the air, resulting in "steam" rising from the water. The vapor clings to trees, wires -- anything along the river bank. It freezes again, leaving the riverbank with a thick coat of ice and frost.
