Description
We got us a convoy! Sure, it's not quite the same convoy made famous in the 1975 song. Rather, this is a military convoy traveling on the Richardson Highway between Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks and Fort Greely, near Delta Junction, Alaska. The United States military has had a major presence in Alaska since World War II. The Alaska Highway was built by soldiers, and both bases were originally airfields built circa 1942. Fort Greely is home to the Cold Regions Test Center, as well as an important part of the country's defense against ballistic missiles. Convoys are a regular sight on this highway, and several businesses along the way encourage the troops to take a break on their way -- including this business offering ice cream and other snacks. I love the pop of color provided by the giant ice cream cone and the American flag against the Army green trucks. This was taken the first week of October, and the fall leaves are long gone.
