Description
Returning from a shopping trip to Fairbanks, I spotted two cow moose enjoying an evening repast of pond weeds beside the Richardson Highway. This lovely lady seemed thoroughly unconcerned about her audience as she dined.
Moose are the largest members of the deer family, and Alaska moose are the largest subspecies. A small adult female (cow) may reach 800 pounds, while a large male (bull) may weigh 1,600 pounds. A large bull may reach a height of six feet. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game estimates a population of as many as 200,000 moose in Alaska.
