Description
Two moose browse on willows on Donnelly Flats near Delta Junction, Alaska. Below-zero temperatures have created a layer of ice fog in the area. The sun will not rise about Donnelly Dome, visible in the background, creating a sort of midday twilight. Moose are the largest members of the deer family, and Alaska moose are the largest subspecies. A small adult female (cow) may reach 800 pounds, while a large male (bull) may weigh 1,600 pounds. A large bull may reach a height of six feet. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game estimates a population of as many as 200,000 moose in Alaska.
