Description
I found these tracks in November snow, crossing the Alaska Highway near Delta Junction, Alaska. Not long before we passed through, a snowshoe hare hopped through this spot, leaving a very distinctive mark in the snow. Hares are on a ten-year cycle in Interior Alaska. The hare population is currently in the middle of an upswing. As a result, predator numbers also climb -- hawks, foxes, wolves, lynx, coyote, and more. When the hare populations inevitably crash, the predator populations drop as well.
