Description
When the Taku Winds howl over the mountains and across the narrow Gastineau Channel to Douglas Island, it's best to appreciate the weather from dry land. The structure in the channel is the salt water pump house from the long abandoned Treadwell Mine. The rotting pilings are the only remnant of a dock which connected the pump house to the shore. The beautiful, sandy beach is itself a leftover from the mining operation, which was active in the early 1900s.
