Description
We were preparing to leave the house just before sunrise on a lovely October morning when my husband spotted this young bull moose on our road. When we left, the moose had moved to the adjacent field, owned by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He clearly didn't read the No Trespassing signs displayed prominently on this fence.
Moose are the largest members of the deer family, and Alaska moose are the largest subspecies. A small adult female (cow) may reach 800 pounds, while a large male (bull) may weigh 1,600 pounds. A large bull may reach a height of six feet. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game estimates a population of as many as 200,000 moose in Alaska.
