Description
To my very imaginative daughter, this snowy print resembles a brain. My cat, while climbing on the keyboard, tried to name this picture Ug. While my chosen title is less creative, it is far more informative. I found this track in early October snow, on a trail crisscrossed with animal tracks. Not long before we passed through, a snowshoe hare sat in this spot, leaving a very distinctive mark in the snow. Hares are on a ten-year cycle in Interior Alaska. The hare population is currently in the middle of an upswing. As a result, predator numbers also climb -- hawks, foxes, wolves, lynx, coyote, and more. When the hare populations inevitably crash, the predator populations drop as well.
